Hi. Have a poke around to find news, information for new members, a potted history of aikido, and other treats. Any questions? Email us!

So, what is aikido anyway?

The Japanese 合気道 (aikido) can be variously translated, but means something like ‘the way of harmonious life-energy’.

Simply put, the goal of aikido is to blend with an attack or opponent. Training involves physical, mental, spiritual and ethical disciplines, combining gentle and therapeutic exercise with a powerful system of defence. Aikido encourages calmness and a measured response to threats.

Novices generally start by exploring the subtleties of controlling an opponent from static grasps.

As you progresses you will be led on to techniques that respond to dynamic attacks, being encouraged to blend rather than clash with the strength of an opponent in order to effectively and safely neutralise them with the minimum amount of effort.

Aikido includes empty hand techniques, sword, stick and knife defences and is an unique opportunity to challenge and expand yourself intellectually and physically.

New students are welcome at any time of the year.
